چکیده
1 The work described in this paper was partially supported by a strategic grant from the City University of Hong Kong [Project No. CityU 7001259]. Abstract. This paper studies the location management problem in PCS network. An adaptive direction-based location update (ADBU) scheme is proposed in which a line-paging method is adopted to minimize the paging cost and an adaptive direction-based scheme is formulated for location update generation. Mobile terminals inspect their directions and a location update will be generated when the change in the direction of a mobile terminal is greater than the direction threshold. In the paper, we assume that the movement of a mobile terminal in a period of time can be divided into steps and each step has a destination. Then, we use a Gauss-Markov process to model the movement of a mobile terminal in each step. With the Gauss-Markov model and a feedback control mechanism, we estimate the optimal value for the direction threshold with the attempt to minimize the update cost and at the same time limit the paging cost using line-paging. Performance results have shown that the performance of ADBU is significantly better than another direction-based update scheme and the distance-based scheme a result of smaller paging cost and update processing cost.

An Enhanced Adaptive Location Update Scheme for Next Generation PCS Networks
Locating users as they move from one place to another in a cellular network is a key issue that allows unrestricted mobility, yet poses several challenging constraints to the network designers. In this paper, an enhanced adaptive location update scheme is proposed to decrease the total cost of the location management process. The proposed scheme relies on the deployment of a direction based loc...
متن کاملAn adaptive distance-based location update algorithm for next-generation PCS networks
In this paper, we propose a stochastic model to compute the optimal update boundary for the distance-based location update algorithm. The proposed model is flexible and captures some of the real characteristics in the wireless cellular environment. The model can adapt to arbitrary cell topologies in which the number of neighboring base stations at different locations may vary. The cell residenc...
متن کاملOn Using Handoff Statistics and Velocity for Location Management in Cellular Wireless Networks
This paper studies the location management problem in cellular wireless networks. We propose a HandoffVelocity Prediction (HVP) scheme to minimize the paging cost in searching a mobile terminal. HVP is based on the assumptions that the movement behavior of mobile terminals has temporal and spatial properties. Based on handoff statistics, the system maintains a handoff graph to describe the move...
متن کاملAnalytical Results for Optimal Choice of Location Update Interval for Mobility Database Failure Restoration in PCS Networks
ÐWhen the location information for a mobile user in the Home Location Register (HLR) is corrupted or obsolete, the new arriving calls to the user may be lost. In order to minimize the effect of such HLR mobility database failure, a location update scheme called period location updating is proposed, and the cost analysis is performed. Analytical results for the failure recovery time distribution...
متن کاملA selective location update strategy for PCS users
A new location update strategy for personal communication services (PCS) networks and its implementation using a genetic algorithm are proposed. Most of the practical cellular mobile systems partition a geographical region into location areas (LAs) and users are made to update on entering a new LA. The main drawback of this scheme is that it does not consider the individual user mobility and ca...
